The origins of gelato date back over 4000 years ago, but it was only during the Rinascimento period, around 1500 and at the moment of maximum European cultural expression. In Florence, a cook named Ruggeri took part in a cooking competition organised by the Medici family that he won thanks to a cold dessert inspired by an ancient recipe that he personalized. It was a sorbet that surprised the palate of Caterina de’ Medici

She loved so much this dessert that on the occasion of her wedding with the Duke Henry of Orleans, she had her cooks prepared an enormous quantity of gelato to all the guests invited at the luxurious banquet.


Thus was born the pleasure of enjoying a fresh and good gelato during the Rinascimento period.
